Conflict is a noun describing competitive and opposing actions
of incompatibles. Unfortunately, Sierra Leone is no stranger to this.
The CONFLICT research clock is based on the existing four C’s
that appraise diamonds: Cut, Clarity, Carat, and Color. With the addition
of the word Conflict, Lin brings awareness to the tragedies and
violence during the country's civil war. Based on a 2007 Amnesty
International Survey, Jewelers report that 83% of customers do
not inquire about the source of their diamond. The high demand for the
stone erupted a civil war in Sierra Leone, killing someone every
83 minutes and causing someone to flee the country every two. Lin
encourages viewers to look in the mirror when they find them-
selves in the situation to purchase a diamond, and ask themselves
if they are contributing to the conflict.
